How Do You Cope With Burnout at Work?

Your Nightmare of a Dream Job

One of life’s cruel jokes is that no matter how great your job is, there are going to be parts of it that you will despise. In 1982 I started my dream job (co hosting a morning radio show), but by 2003, the stuff that I despised was kicking the ass of the stuff I liked.

Be careful if (when) you find yourself surfing the web and checking your Facebook page. Constantly. Also be mindful if making coffee has become a twenty minute ritual.

  • For me it was easy. I got laid off. Seriously, worked i n a very high pressure job, and it was always the family that kept me going. Then after 20+ years, I just couldn’t do it, so it was like the perfect storm. I was done, a few opportunities came up, and the economy died. So being the “junior” project manager, I was first one to get laid off. So instead of quitting and struggling, I got laid off and have a safety net. I guess it kinda worked out….

  • Jeff:

When that little voice inside your head says ‘burn out’… you better ‘bail out’… Bosses really don’t care, and have no plan in place for that, especialy in Government. Same thing every day (lemmings all the way babe… the help running the same path day in and day out, no independent thinking allowed).

After 12 years on the job, i was thinking how this job sucked or I was ‘burnt out’. 3 years later, I just up and left. (I’ll get my “campesino*” level state pension at 55.) Now i’m changing gears, in school again, and happier than a clam at high tide… As a matter of fact i just put in for a teaching job, the only aspect of my old job a actually liked (instructor at the academy).
