Sometimes a good word from a friend will point us in the right direction.
Rob Leonard, owner and brewer of New England Brewing was the first friendly RLSG navigator who steered us to MiKro Beer Bar in Hamden. Rob told us about this “cool place with a terrific craft beer selection and outrageous food” way back in August, when we recorded Episode 11 at his NEB in Woodbridge. We listened, filed it away in the recesses of our gray matter, talked about going to Mikro, added it to our “RLSG Location Wish List” (one of our Google docs), and then… just got caught up in “guiding The Guide.”
We became sidetracked by a montage of shows, guests, October snow, the New Year and those darn questions of modern living. Dissolve to mid January (Episode 32). That’s when we first encountered Mary Elliot (who now has morphed into one of our RLSG web bloggers), Eric Lehman and his wife Amy Nawrocki. Eric and Amy really know food. Really? Yessss, really–without the question mark. Lehman is the author of the Insider’s Guide to Connecticut, a newly released, much-acclaimed book that I will undoubtedly blog some more about when Lehman & Nawrocki return to do a repeat guest turn on Episode 49, which airs on Sunday, June 3rd, but we’ll record this coming Sunday at Gouveia Vineyards because we presently record our show two weeks ahead of actual air time.
Are you following me? If not, it doesn’t really matter, because the point here is that Eric was the second RLSG friend to rave about Mikro. He told us we needed to get over there to record a show. Which we finally did in Episode 47! And boy, were we ever glad. We then met Michael Fox, the head chef at Mikro– who really (that word again), knows how to turn out stunning food. He’s a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, worked with Chef Bobby Flay in NYC and other upscale places. Well, Bobby’s loss is our gain. Fox’s creativity in Mikro’s kitchen is inspired by the craft-beers on the menu: flavorful, spicy, sweet, artisanal and very impressive.
Sustenance well worth heading over to 3000 Whitney Avenue for. Take it from a friend.
Cheers,
-CPG
