Are there rules for clothing any more?

“…and what are they?” wonders guest editor and New York Times columnist Mark Oppenheimer. (I became a huge fan of Mark’s when he wrote “It’s a Wonderful Block“. about the Westville section of New Haven.)

In particular, Mark wanted to discuss the proper attire for men at weddings these days. (Mark doesn’t feel the Oakleys-over-the-baseball-cap look favored by Coach Taylor on Friday Night Lights falls into this category.)

Thoughts?

Long pants and sneakers: light socks or dark socks?

I’ve had this dilemma for years now: when wearing sneakers (“trainers” if you’re English) with long pants, should your socks be light or dark? A subset of this problem: whether the sneakers are light or dark.

Which brings me to another question. At what age does the average man begin to feel that it’s okay to wear dark socks with shorts. (This look can sometimes be pulled off by Brazilian soccer stars, but not by you, pops.)

So, what say you – dark socks or white socks when wearing long pants and sneakers. (We’ll tackle the age/shorts thing another time.)
