having aged into orphan status, we really can choose our visitations, but prior to relativicide we truly balanced out the dysfunction vistation - as each side was equally painful to endure...it was literally taking our medicine, buttoning lips and leaving early - unfortunately this was mostly before we had kids so there was no "bedtime"/"getting a cold"/"gets very cranky" line we could inveigh...we managed, every one spoke to everyone, but much (much) went unsaid. We are WASPs after all...

Uh oh-- as it turns out, we do have to fly to a family wedding in September so you've got me thinking. My husband's college roommate directed an airplane horror-flick called "Quarantine" about a deadly rabies-like virus that breaks out aboard an airplane; might be fun to recreate this with kids to encourage imaginative play. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with the classic family contest where the one who can pretend-barf into the air sickness bags most authentically wins. And maybe this is a good time to introduce them to Kumon workbooks, Math League competition practice tests, or to learn Poker.
