Episode 19: Available Light
Podcast: Download
Episode 19 was recorded at Anna Liffey’s, an incredible Irish Pub on Whitney Avenue in New Haven.
This weeks guests included Ann McGuire, Katie Gerhard, her husband Joe (a photographer and, as you’ll hear, a talented musician), John Broker, Frank from “The Liffey”, and last but certainly not least, our first heckler!
We drank Guinness, ate fish and chips, and talked about friends, cursing, and available light.
And, as always, we invite you to continue the conversation in the Comments section…
How do you handle social situations with divorced couples?
I have encountered this situation recently, and I thought it might prove to be a good conversation starter during our gathering at Press New Haven.
Boy was I right – there was a visceral response at the table! (We briefly toyed with the idea of a fantasy-football-style division of the friendships.)
How do YOU handle interactions with divorced couples… OR… what’s your perspective as part of a divorced couple?
Episode 18: Woodstock, Shoptailing, and Living a Good Life
Podcast: Download
This is episode 18, recorded on Sunday October 16th at Press New Haven.
Press is a happening restaurant in the “Goat Cheese” section of New Haven (as usual, you’ll just have to listen!) that specializes in artisan pizza and great wines. I was joined – as usual – by Duo Dickinson, along with Paul Weymann and Tom Methot from Press, as well as Michael Morand, Raeleen Mautner, and Bonnie Sharon.
We talked about about social movements, “shoptailing”, and important habits for a good life…
Please tell us what you think in the Comments – or start a conversation of your own!
What are the most important things to recycle?
Suzi Craig described her guilt over not recycling “every paper towel”. (She calls it “re-guilt”)
I know where Suzi’s coming from. We want to do the right thing. We want to model good behavior for our children. But how much recycling is reasonable for the average person, and what, exactly, should we be recycling?
As Duo would say on his Facebook page, “Discern and Discuss”!
What do you do when you get a cold?
Do you go to work and risk spreading the virus to others, or do you stay home?
This question is compliments of Liz Larkin, who was trying an old home remedy – a hot toddy - during our conversation at 116 Crown.
So, this one is a two-parter; What do you do when you feel a cold coming on, and do you usually call in sick or tough it out?
Episode 17: Condolences, Guilt and Smartphone Addiction
Podcast: Download
Episode 17 was recorded on Sunday October 16th at 116 Crown in New Haven.
I was joined by my “Spock”, Duo Dickinson, along 116 Crown’s John Ginetti, social media “gurette” Suzi Craig (she live Tweeted the session), personal organizing expert Elizabeth Larkin, and composer, educator, mathematician, inventor and iPhone app developer, Harlan Brothers. (Harlan is also a big Albert Brooks fan. You’ll have to listen.)
We told stories about how to best share your condolences (Duo likes handwritten notes), colds, recycling guilt (or “re-guilt”, as Suzi calls it), and smartphone addiction.
Is there anything I’ve missed? What would YOU like to talk about?
It’s looking a lot like Fall – what’s on your mind?
It’s getting colder. I hear the football crowds at the Yale Bowl on certain Saturdays. And we’re about to hit Costco for candy because of the ONSLAUGHT of trick or treaters that our neighborhood attracts…
Yes, Fall is in the air.
What Fall-related questions should we be asking in the RLSG? Share your ideas in the Comments – I might pose some of them to our guest conversationalists when we gather on Sunday…
How do you deal with the stress of holiday shopping?
…and how do you make the holidays meaningful for children? These are two of the questions raised by Christine Ohlman this week.
Gerry McGuire noted that people with who like “quirky and oddball things” are the easiest to shop for. He’s flummoxed by his wife, who doesn’t seem to want anything – except that “she hates being cold”. He gives her blankets. I suggested he consider branching out into fleece.
How do you deal with the stress of holiday shopping – along with the desire to make the celebration meaningful for children?
Episode 16: A Rock Star, an Oscar Blogger and a Stay at Home Dad
Podcast: Download
This week we gathered with owner Dave McCoart at Sage American Grille and Oyster Bar in the “City Point” neighborhood of New Haven. Our guest editors included the legendary “Beehive Queen”; musician, songwriter and lead singer for the Saturday Night Live band, Christine Ohlman; Scott Feinberg, the chief oscar blogger and analyst for The Hollywood Reporter; writer, singer, and stay-at-home dad Gerry McGuire; and, as always, my friend since high school, architect Duo Dickinson.
We talked about everything from Ronnie Spector to the movie that bears Gerry’s name (kind of), kissing, Klingons, holiday shopping, finding meaning for kids, insomnia, and commenting on an ex’s Facebook page.
Oh, and Duo wants to know what it is in your life that isn’t satisfying. Please let us know in the comments!
What are some of the best ways to express condolences?
This question is a direct result of the loss of Steve Jobs this week.
I thought about how sad I was that he was gone, and realized that my pain was noting compared to the grief being suffered by his family and close friends.
Which inspired this question; What are some of the best ways to express condolences?
