Recording Session 25 – Chips
Chips Family Restaurant has been voted “Best Pancakes in Connecticut” for the past three years, which made it a no-brainer for our next “moveable feast and recording session”. (We’ll be gathering at the Orange location)
Our guest conversationalists will be Susannah Bailin, Jaki Valensi-Lauper, Helen Kauder and Randye Kaye, and we’ll be discussing real life questions that relate to the coming holidays.
I invite you to join the show prep session in the comments!
How do you cope with a major illness?
This was the first topic of conversation in Episode 23, and it was inspired by our *inspirational* guest, Eileen Kaplan.
Eileen is a cancer survivor (or “cancer thriver” as she puts it), and her coping method – after a good cry with her husband – was humor. (Eileen went on to write the book Laughter is the Breast Medicine.)
Have you dealt with a major illness? (And if so, how did you cope?)
Episode 23: Bullies, Turducken and Getting Things Done
Podcast: Download
Our 23rd editorial meeting was held at Atticus Bookstore Cafe, an incredible independent book store on Chapel Street in New Haven.
Our host was Dan Gaffney, and our guest editors included Eileen Kaplan, Lon Seidman and Jud Smith. (You can learn more about each of them in the show prep entry.)
We discussed problems involving major illness, adult bullies, holiday food choices and systems for “getting things done”!
What is your favorite new piece of technology?
Our web guy, Gary Choronzy has often complained to me about what he perceives to be “techno-bashing” in some of our conversations.
(I’m not going to say who Gary blames for said bashing… but he is a cohost of the show and it isn’t me.)
The counterpoint: What is your favorite new piece of technology?
Recording Session 24 – Elm City Market
We’re very excited about our next stop, Elm City Market, a “member owned cooperative grocery story” in one of New Haven’s coolest new residential buildings, 360 State.
We will be hosted by Amy Christensen-Regni and Mark Regni, and guest editors are Ira Rosofsky (who wrote in to the RLSG website and shared some great gift giving advice), Dr. Harry Schwartz, and Stacey Battat.
I’d like to invite each of you to introduce yourselves, include any links to your businesses or personal website, and a couple of real life dilemmas you think we need to be talking about. The key is to focus on something you’ve learned, or would like to learn, that you think would be useful in “helping each other live more informed lives…”.
Can’t wait!
Episode 22: Doing The Right Thing
Podcast: Download
This week Steve Katz hooked us up with a corner table at Katz’s Deli in Woodbridge. (He also introduced us to 90 year old Ed Abrams, who you’ll hear in this week’s conversation.)
We also welcomed guest editors Jeanette Kuvin Oren, Nanci Sklar and Joel Sachs.
We talked about the latest disappointments in the news – and our favorite new technologies.
Pull up a chair!
Recording Session 23 – Atticus Bookstore Cafe
Welcome to the all new “Show Prep” section of The Real Life Survival Guide website. This is where we’ll get to know each other and collaborate on topics in preparation for the next RLSG recording session.
I’d like to thank Ben Gaffney for hosting our Real Life Survival Guide recording session at Atticus Bookstore/Cafe this Sunday. I’d also like to introduce our guest conversationalists; Eileen Kaplan, Lon Seidman, and returning veteran Jud Smith.
If you’re one of our guest editors, please take a moment to introduce yourself in the comments. (You can also share any topic ideas you have for this week’s session.)
Thanks – it’s going to be fun!

(How) did your marriage change you?
This one touched off some quite interesting back and forth during our meeting at Plan B!
(Duo was amazed that I went from an OCD-ey neat freak to a… well, slightly less OCD-ey neat freak.)
What about you - (How) did your marriage change you?
Episode 21: The Good, The Bad, and Trouble in the Neighborhood
Podcast: Download
We like to gather at fun places, and this week was no exception: we met in Milford to check out the newly opened Plan B Burger Bar. The food, the people and and the atmosphere are all amazing … and Plan B also happens to be a kind supporter of Connecticut Public Broadcasting!
Our guest conversationalists included Lena DiGenti from Plan B, as well as Danyel Aversenti, the energy behind Our Empty Space, a company focused on filling empty storefronts with temporary retail, art shows and events, Josh Sapire, a phyician with Advanced Radiology Consultants, and Gaye Hyre, organizer of the recent ArtBra New Haven benefit for the Breast Center at Smilow Cancer Hospital.
We talked about High mindedness, mass appeal, and therapy. (Here’s the link to Duo’s article on Steve Jobs and Frank Lloyd Wright.)
Is there anything in the episode you’d like to explore in greater detail? Feel free to tell us in the Comments!
What are the biggest distractions in your day to day life?
One of the big things I’m noticing in our conversations so far is that for many of us, modern life has become a virtual “fun house” of light and sound and distraction.
(And to make matters worse, the fun house fits in your pocket. “iFunHouse, if you will.)
If we’re going to really confront the issue, I think the first step is to identify the source(s). SOOOO… What are the biggest distractions in your day to day life?
